The Generations Book/Film Club Meeting

Displaced PersonsJoseph Berger, the New York Times columnist and editor since 1984, is a child of Holocaust survivors.

Berger's book is an extraordinary memoir, full of pride, tenderness and love.... It is a tribute to the dead and a valentine to the living, not just his parents, but all the tailors, barbers, grocers and chicken farmers he knew as a child -- a surrogate family that would have no connection if not for the magnitude of its shared loss…There is something improbably upbeat about this memoir, the return to life of the Berger family… This is very much a Holocaust recovery book. The pain here is more controlled, less volatile….Of course, Berger knows that no matter what goes unsaid in the lives of Holocaust survivors, Auschwitz is always in the room, taking up most of the space…
