Emperor Divine smallBROOKDALE READ

We will share a common intellectual experience as we read the novel When the Emperor Was Divine, by Julie Otsuka. The book follows one Japanese American family's experience when they were forced to live in an internment camp during World War II. Programs will be held throughout the semester, centered on the novel’s themes of racism, prejudice, and the dangers of stereotyping. READ MORE

Descendants of Holocaust Survivors Brunch

BursteinBethUniform Please Join us for The Generations: Descendants of Holocaust Survivors Brunch Sunday, October 6. The brunch will feature photographer Beth Burstein (posing in the uniform her father Isaak wore in a Nazi slave labor camp). A daughter of a Holocaust survivor, Beth will speak about her photo essay, "The Legacy: A Daughter's Experience of the Holocaust," which is based on a pilgrimage she made to her father's hometown in Lithuania. "My exhibit is about my father's memory and the memory of a lost culture..The message is that this history is carried on from generation to generation. Genocide really does affect generations to come... " (New Jersey Jewish News, Dec.5, 2012)

The Brunch will also mark the launch of Illuminating Traditions, Generational Hanukkah Stories Before, During and After the Holocaust. Authored by survivors and descendants in our community, this most appealing collection of memories, anecdotes, recipes and more was conceived and assembled by members of TheGenerations. It is the descendants loving tribute to their parents and grandparents, whose legacy of loss, resilience, courage and values, they are determined to guard and uphold.
