Emperor Divine smallBROOKDALE READ

JOIN CHHANGE AND THE BROOKDALE COMMUNITY THIS FALL

We will share a common intellectual experience as we read the novel When the Emperor Was Divine, by Julie Otsuka. The book follows one Japanese American family's experience when they were forced to live in an internment camp during World War II. Programs will be held throughout the semester, centered on the novel’s themes of racism, prejudice, and the dangers of stereotyping. READ MORE

This evening we will remember those first widespread acts of violence against the Jewish communities of Germany, Austria and the Sudetenland that foreshadowed the Holocaust yet to come. Holocaust survivor Erica Rosenthal taught thousands of our community’s children about the destruction wrought by hatred each time she shared her testimony about Kristallnacht.

To honor her memory, we will feature her powerful video testimony and display some of her personal keepsakes. Other personal survivor testimonies of Kristallnacht will be shared in a book of remembrance.
