Did you know that Chhange began in 1979 as a Lunch and Learn series? Chhange is going back to our roots and kicking off our virtual Lunch and Learn Series with a special discussion led by Executive Director, Dr. Sara E. Brown on gender in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.

Sara will share findings from her work and research on women's agency before, during, and after the 1994 Genocide against the Tusti in Rwanda. She will discuss the man=perpetrator, woman=bystander/victim paradigm that still dominates the narrative. Sara will also share how asking questions like "Where are the women?", "How did they get there?", "What were they doing?" and "Why?" led her to a new understanding of the role of women during the genocide.

Sara has worked and conducted research in Rwanda since 2004 and completed extensive fieldwork in Rwanda during her PhD. This fieldwork culminated in the publication of her book, Gender and Genocide in Rwanda, which was recently made Open Access by Routledge Publishing & Knowledge Unlatched.
