2024 Colloquium - Confronting Propaganda: Your Message Matters

Join Chhange for our 42nd Annual Colloquium featuring plenary speakers Renee Hobbs and Consolee Nishimwe on Wednesday, May 15, beginning at 9:30AM, on the campus of Brookdale Community College.

As Founder of the Media Education Lab, a global online community, Renee is one of the world’s leading experts on media literacy education. Her book, Mind Over Media: Propaganda Education for a Digital Age, won the 2021 Prose Award for Excellence in Social Sciences. Renee’s talks engage people to activate their critical thinking about contemporary popular culture and media messages, especially the new types of persuasive genres on social media that may escape people’s scrutiny.

Consolee is an author, motivational speaker, and survivor of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda. She is a committed speaker on the genocide, a defender of women’s rights, and an advocate for other genocide survivors. In 2012, Consolee published her memoir, Tested to the Limit: A Genocide Survivor’s Story of Pain, Resilience, and Hope. She has also addressed the UN General Assembly during Kwibuka 24.

Breakout Sessions will include a variety of workshops led by educators, Survivors, scholars, and community activists.
