The ethnic cleansing of the Armenians of Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh by Azerbaijan in September 2023 was one of the largest and bloodiest episodes of civilian displacements in the South Caucasus since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Dr. Artyom H. Tonoyan will discuss the history of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, why it matters, and what may come next. This program was held via Zoom Weds. Nov. 29, 2023 beginning at 7 pm.

A native of Gyumri, Armenia, Dr. Tonoyan is a sociologist and Visiting Professor of Global Studies at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota. His research interests include sociology of religion, religion and politics in the South Caucasus, and religion and nationalism in post-Soviet Russia. He has been a frequent guest on the BBC, Deutsche Welle, France 24, and other news outlets. Dr. Tonoyan is the editor of the recently published volume Black Garden Aflame: The Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict in the Soviet and Russian Press.
