Voices of Yazidi Women

How does the media portray women’s experiences during genocide?

Over the past five years, ISIL has perpetrated mass atrocities against the Yazidi religious minority in Iraq, including mass killings, forced conversions, and the systematic rape and enslavement of Yazidi women. Dr. Johanna Foster interviewed dozens of displaced Yazidi women who survived life under ISIL to better understand their experiences and perceptions in the aftermath of the atrocities.

Dr. Foster’s research shows that “survivors of mass rape and genocide are inevitably re-victimized and re-traumatized in the retelling of traumatic experiences.” Join Chhange for a discussion on ethical journalism and representation of survivors on the global stage.
